During a pre-match press conference held before Liverpool`s match against Galatasaray, Hugo Ékitiké, the 23-year-old French international, addressed the red card he received in the Premier League champions` 2-1 third-round win over Southampton. He was sent off for removing his shirt while celebrating the English club`s decisive goal.
Ékitiké admitted he had forgotten he was already cautioned with a yellow card when he took off his shirt. Initial reports suggested that the Anfield club had issued a financial penalty for his dismissal. However, Foot Mercato later clarified, a report subsequently confirmed by Arne Slot, that the club did not impose any sanctions on the striker for his actions. As a consequence of his suspension, the Frenchman was unavailable for Liverpool`s first Premier League defeat of the season against Crystal Palace.
Ékitiké Regrets His Actions
Reflecting on the Southampton incident, the former Eintracht Frankfurt forward stated, “That wasn`t a smart move. I was quite disappointed watching the team play from home on Saturday. As I`ve already mentioned, I have apologized to everyone, especially my teammates, and I assure you that this will not happen again.”
